Bees in Thailand have been reported to drink human tears!  Ridiculous, no bee will be landing near my eye anytime soon though. – link

..workers drank lachrymation (tears) from human eyes in more than 262 naturally-occurred cases at 10 sites in N and S Thailand during all months of the year. A few visits were also seen to eyes of zebu and dog, indicating a probable broad mammalian host range. On man the bees were relatively gentle visitors, mostly landing on the lower eyelashes from where they imbibed tears for 0.5-2.5 min, often singly but occasionally in congregations of 5-7 specimens per eye.

The parasite then feeds from both the fish’s blood and particles of left over food in the fish’s mouth. It does little-to-no harm to the fish, and the fish has no problem using the parasite as a functioning tongue.

I like tacos and burritos but will definitely have to pass on ant eggs…

Firstly what is an escamole? It is the eggs of a special ant called the giant black Liometopum. The eggs are not easy to get as the ants guarding them are very vicious and are extremely venomous. Getting Hungry yet?

I used to study tarantulas back in high school and found that they are not as scary as they look.  (Harmless to humans pretty much but they can eat mice.)

Anyways, I guess you can eat tarantulas in Cambodia and I agree it might be a good idea to take a bite of that spider meat every once in awhile.  Think of all the protein!

Next time you are in Cambodia, make sure to get some of this grub.

World’s Snail Racing Championships is probably the slowest racing championships in the world…

The 2008 world snail racing championship was held on Saturday 19th July. The 2008 world champion was a snail called Heikki who won in a time of 3 mins 2 secs. The owner was 13-year-old Georgie Brown from East Winch near King’s Lynn.

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with eating wasps, they provide great source of protein.

Wasp hunters from the village, who are mostly in their 80’s, catch them in nearby forests.

They are then boiled in water, dried and sprinkled over the cracker mix, which is then stamped by hot iron cracker cutters.

A bag of 20 crackers costs £1.60, but output is limited as the wasps are caught in the wild for optimum flavour.

I, too, have been guilty of playing with insects when I was younger, mostly with preying mantises and dragonflies. But wait, here’s some really cool beetle fights in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I haven’t seen beetles that much in my life but it’s interesting to see the beetles fight. (sorta like insect version of mixed martial arts?)

A female Stag Beetle is placed inside a hollowed-out piece of wood (look carefully on the video and you should make it out) and the two battling beetles are placed on top. They can detect the scent of the female below so they battle it out for the mating rights. Just like old-fashioned log fights the winner is the one who manages to push their love-rival off the wood.

Here’s a great way to make Beehive jar and get some free honey.

A bell jar was placed on top of a mini hive and bees from the nucleus started to create foundation of a hive in the jar. Once the foundation is laid, the bees work in masses to form the rest of the hive. 14 more pics of bees making hive in a jar after the jump.

The hobo spider (Tegenaria agrestis) is a member of the genus of spiders known colloquially as funnel web spiders. It is one of a small number of spiders in North America whose bites are generally considered to be medically significant. Individuals construct a funnel-shaped structure of silk sheeting and lie in wait at the small end of the funnel for prey insects to blunder onto their webs. Hobo spiders sometimes build their webs in or around human habitations. Although this species of spider has a reputation for aggressiveness, they will normally avoid contact with humans.
